Following the qualification as a Chartered Accountant, he joined the Calcutta office of erswhile Lovelock & Lewes (now PricewaterhouseCoopers ), a renowned Consultancy and Chartered Accountant firm in India as a qualified assistant in 1981 and became a manager in 1985. In 1987, he was seconded to erstwhile Coopers & Lybrand London office as a Supervisor in the Computer Audit group. He designed and applied computer audit techniques including reviews of IT controls, computer audit software and audit test data for a wide variety of companies including British Telecom, Gateway Building Society, Banque Paribas , PFW Limited, Henlys plc., Stafford Motors and Scammell Motors. He acted as instructor and group leader in various Coopers&Lybrand in-house training courses, including the Computer Audit Specialists course. He also developed audit packages. Syamal returned to the Calcutta office of Lovelock & Lewes in 1998 to establish the Computer Audit group in India and to lead computer auditing in the firm. He became a partner of the firm in 1990. In 1995 he set up the Facility Management and Information Processing (FMIP) cell and Software Development & Implementation (SDI) cell in the firm.
   
He left PricewaterhouseCoopers in June 1999 and set up IT Services.
